User Guide - Application scope

Introduction

The Application scope is the default “view” for any Application. It presents items in the Application in varying different grouping methods and in different layers:

Accessing the Application scope

To access the Application scope, click the Application scope entry in the Investigation panel - this is default selection when first entering an Application:

Introduction

The Module scope offers a view based on theindividual Modulesthat exist in the current Application - Modules are defined (whether automatically or manually) as part of the analysis process prior to importing the application data into CAST Imaging.

The Transaction scope offers a view based on theindividual Transactionsthat exist in the current Application:

In ≥ 2.20.0, Transaction search modal is consistent with Global search. Note that in comparison to previous releases, there is no longer a filter for excluding transactions “with end-point” and “without end-point” - instead the search modal will systematically return both complete (with end-points) and broken transactions (without end-points) and make them available for selection:

Introduction

The Data Call Graph scope offers a view based on theindividual Data Call Graphsthat exist in the current Application. A “call graph” is a view showing “Entry Points to End Points/Data Entities”.

Data Call Graphs option will be deactivated if there are no call graphs.
For any call graph, you cannot hide a grouped node.

Introduction

Microservices - also known as “microservice architecture” - is an approach to developing a single application as a suite of small services, each running in its own process and communicating with lightweight mechanisms, often an HTTP resource API. These services are built around business capabilities and independently deployable by fully automated deployment machinery (see https://martinfowler.com/tags/microservices.html). CAST AIP is able to detect these microservices during an analysis (with the assistance of a dedicated extension) and the subsequent results are made available in the CAST Imaging Service scope:

Introduction

The Application to Application Dependencies scope is a specific view made available for a specific use case: the requirement to view interactions between any of the Applications that have been imported into CAST Imaging:

Each Application is represented by a circular node, the larger the node, the larger the Application (based on the number of lines of code):

Only available if the application has been analyzed in CAST Console with the inclusion of the com.castsoftware.architecture extension (≥ 1.0.0-beta3).

Insufficient understanding of the project structure can impede collaboration, introduce conflicting dependencies, and complicate code integration within the project. Modifying or updating the codebase without a clear understanding of the structure can result in errors, conflicts, and development delays.
