Adding Layers

To add Layers for your own use:

From the shortcut menu:

Right-click in the Layers window.
Select Create Layer from the shortcut menu - the Layer Properties dialog box will launch.
Rename the Layer as appropriate and select the required options.
Click OK to confirm.

Notes

If the Layers window is not visible, click View > Layer to display it.
All new Layers will be named “New Layer”. This can be changed during creation of the layer, or at a later date using the Layer Properties dialog box.
You cannot name a layer with the same name as the name of a layer that already exists.

Assigning objects and links to Layers

When you first place objects and links in the Graphical View they will automatically be placed in either the Default, Belongs To or Escalated Layers.

To assign them to a Layer you have just added:

Select the object(s) and/or link(s) you want to assign.
Click Graphic > Send to Layer > [name of required Layer]

Notes

You cannot return Belongs To and Escalated links that have already been moved (from their default Layers to a user defined layer) back to their defaults.
If you reassign a Belongs To link to a user defined Layer, it will change color from pink to red. The properties of the link remain unchanged.

Displaying Layers

To display a Layer:

From the Layers window:

Select the check box next to the Layer you want to display.

Notes

A check mark next to a Layer name in the Layers window indicates that the Layer is already displayed.
You can also display a Layer through the Layer Properties dialog box by selecting the Visible option.
To hide a layer, repeat above actions.

Removing Layers

To remove a Layer you have created:

Right-click the Layer you want to remove in the Layers window.
Select Drop Layer from the shortcut menu.

Notes

Any objects or links that have been assigned to a layer that you remove will automatically be reassigned to the Default Layer and will NOT be removed from the Graphical View.
You cannot remove the Default, Belongs To and Escalated Layers.

To rename a Layer you have created:

Right-click the Layer you want to rename in the Layers window.
Select Edit from the shortcut menu - the Layers Properties dialog box will then be displayed.
Change the highlighted Layer name as appropriate.
Click OK to confirm.

Notes

You cannot rename the Default, Belongs To and Escalated Layers.

Understanding Active Layers

The Active Layer is the Layer to which all objects and links (except Belongs To links andEscalated links) that you add to the Graphical View will be assigned to. By default this is set to the Default Layer.

You can immediately find out which layer is the Active Layer because it will be highlighted in green.

Setting the Active Layer

To set the Active Layer, you can:

Right click the Layer you want to set as active in the Layers Window. This will launch the shortcut menu.
Select Set Current from the menu.

The Layer you selected will then become the Active Layer and will be highlighted in green.

Understanding Default Layers

The Layers window contains three default Layers:

layer

Any objects or links (except Belongs To and Escalated links, see options below) will be automatically assigned to this Layer when you place them in the Graphical View. This Layer is displayed by default.
layer

All Belongs To links are automatically assigned to this Layer. This Layer is displayed by default.
layer

All Escalated links are automatically assigned to this layer. This Layer is displayed by default.
