Arranging objects in the Graphical View

To arrange objects in the Graphical View, use one of the following options:

Arrange Wizard

The Arrange Wizard provides three arrangement types automatically generated by the application.

Click Graphic > Arrange Objects > Arrange Objects located on the menu bar.
Select the type of arrangement you require.

Building views automatically

In order to save time, you can quickly and easily build Graphical Views using the automatic Build View options:

Place an object in the Graphical View.
Right click the object to display the contextual menu.
Select Build View and then the function you require:
- Call Hierarchy
- Path Finder

Notes

The results of all features launched under the Build View option will be displayed in their own Graphical Views - some windows may not be accessible from this view (such as the Domain window).
You can return to the original view using the Window menu option.
Build View is not currently supported in a CAST Storage Service environment

There are two ways to close your Graphical View:

Click File located on the menu bar and then select Close from the drop down menu.
Or you can click the button located in the top right-hand corner of the Graphical View.

If your Graphical View has already been saved (click here to find out more about Saving a Graphical View) and not modified since, it will close.

To delete items from the Graphical View:

Delete

In the Graphical View, select the item you want to delete.
If you want to delete more than one item, use the SHIFT and/or CTRL keys in conjunction with the mouse to select the items you require.
Use the DELETE key on your keyboard to delete the items.
Alternatively, you can use the Edit > Delete Graphic option.

You can drag and drop objects from and to the following windows within the application:

Dropping a saved Graphical View will remove it from the Knowledge Base.

To drop a saved Graphical View:

Use the File > Drop menu option
In the displayed Drop dialog box, select the Graphical View you want to drop.
Click Drop to drop the Graphical View.

Notes

Any objects and links that are present in the dropped Graphical View will NOT be removed from the Knowledge Base.

Dropping a link will remove it from the Knowledge Base.

Dropping a link

In the Graphical View, select the link or links that you want to drop from the Knowledge Base.
Select Object > Remove Link > Drop Link on the toolbar (you can also use the right click shortcut menu).
You will then be prompted whether you want to do this - select YES.

The link will be removed from the Knowledge Base and you will no longer be able to see it in the Graphical View.

Dropping an object will remove it from the Knowledge Base. To drop an object:

In the Graphical View, select the object or objects that you want to drop from the Knowledge Base.
Select Object > Drop Object on the toolbar (you can also use the right click shortcut menu).
You will then be prompted whether you want to do this - select YES.

If none of the objects you want to drop are shared in the Knowledge Base (i.e. they do not belong to other analyzed projects), then the objects will be removed from the Knowledge Base and you will no longer see them in the Graphical View or in the Object Browser.

To expand links between objects in the Graphical View:

Right click the escalated link you want to expand to launch the shortcut menu.
Select Expand Link (you can also select this option from the Explore menu).
In the displayed Expand Link dialog box (see below), child objects not currently displayed in the Graphical View will be listed.
Select the child objects you want to add to the Graphical View.
Click OK to confirm the action. The objects will be added to the Graphical View. The escalated link will be removed and replaced with other link types.

Locating Objects in the Graphical View

In the Technical Browser, right click an object you want to locate in the Graphical View.
Select Locate on from the shortcut menu and then the name of the model (view) that you want to search.
The focus in the Graphical View will move to the chosen object.

Notes

Only objects with a red tick () next to them in the Technical Browser can be located in the Graphical View.
You can locate multiple objects by selecting them in the Technical Browser with the SHIFT/CTRL keys and the mouse.

Because the Object Browser (containing both the Technical Browser and the Domain Browser) does not always contain all the objects currently present in the Knowledge Base (see Blank View for more information), a search using the Find object in Browser option will not always return all objects.

This option allows you to search the entire contents of the Knowledge Base instead of just the Object Browser:

Select the Edit > Find Object in Knowledge Base option from the menu (you can also use the shortcut key: SHIFT+F).
The Find dialog box will then be launched.
Enter the string you want to search for (in Find what), or enter an object name, part of an object name or an object ID.
Click Search to find an occurrence of the string/ID in the Analysis Service schema.
The object containing the string/ID will be displayed in the right hand list.

Enter the string you want to search for (in Find what), or enter an object name, part of an object name or an object ID.

Flagging objects

Flagging objects entails adding a “marker” to the Knowledge Base that references the object in question. This can then be used when to distinguish particular objects.

Select the object in the Graphical View that you want to flag.
Select Object > Flag from the menu bar.

The object will then be flagged in the Knowledge Base.

Notes

To differentiate flagged and unflagged objects in the Graphical View, two colors will be used:
Flagged

Unflagged
Flagged server side objects will also be shown as flagged when using SQL-Builder.
You will be prompted if you want to flag the selected object’s sub objects.

Unflagging objects

Unflagging an object entails removing the “marker” from the Knowledge Base for the referenced object.

Ignoring Links

The main purpose of the Dynamic Link Manager is for manually reviewing the status of links whose authenticity cannot be absolutely determined by CAST. This can be achieved using the GUI.

Links can be in three states:

To be reviewed: links are in this state when you open the Dynamic Link Manager after the completion of an analysis.
Ignored: links are in this state when you have ticked them after examination (and it proves to be incorrect or false). By default Ignored links are not displayed in the GUI - toggle the Hide Reviewed Links button to view them.
Validated: links are in this state when you have marked them as Validated after examination (and it proves to be correct). By default Validated links are not displayed in the GUI - toggle the Hide Reviewed Links button to view them.

To launch a Call Hierarchy operation, you can do one of the following:

From the Assistant, select Call Hierarchy
Right click blank space in the Graphical View and select Build View > Call Hierarchy
Place an object in a Graphical View, right click it and select Build View > Call Hierarchy
From the toolbar select File > New > New Impact Analysis
Use the shortcut key CTRL+SHIFT+N.

The first option will launch the Define scope dialog box; the second will launch the Define starting object dialog box; the third will launch the Call Hierarchy dialog box and the remaining options will launch the New Impact Analysis dialog box:

Launching a Dedicated Application

A dedicated application is an application which can specifically allow the modification and edition of an object’s source code.

There are various ways to launch your Dedicated Application:

Tools menu

First select an object in your Graphical View that you would like to modify by left-clicking on it once (a select box will appear around the object).
Then click the Tools menulocated and select Call Dedicated Application from the drop down menu.

This will automatically call the associated application (if you have this application installed).

Client Identification dialog box

The very first time you launch Enlighten, the application may ask you for an Identifier. This is simply a hostname that identifies your client machine to the server.

All you need to do is to enter an Identifier in the appropriate field which can be up to 10 characters long. You can use your existing client name if you want, or the last 10 digits of your IP address if this is more convenient.

To access the standard Add Linked Objects function:

In the Graphical View, select an object whose dependent links you would like to view.
You can also use the Add Linked Objects feature on multiple objects: Hold down the SHIFT or CTRL key, and the select the objects you require with the mouse button.

To launch the Code Viewer:

In the Graphical View, select an object or link whose code you would like to view.
Then right click and select Code Viewer from the shortcut menu.

The selected object or link’s source code will then be located (using the location information stored in the Knowledge Base), and displayed in the Code Viewer window. The object name is also displayed in the tab at the bottom of the window along with the number of bookmarks (if any).

Locking and Unlocking objects

A locked object is marked as “locked” in the Knowledge Base - modifications made to the object by another user cannot be updated to the Knowledge Base.

Locking Objects

Select the object in the Graphical View that you want to lock.
Select Object > Lock from the menu bar.

The object will then be permanently locked in the Knowledge Base for your use only.

Notes

To differentiate locked and unlocked objects in the Graphical View, two colors will be used:
Locked

Unlocked
If you lock an object, then subsequently flag it, the flag marker will override the lock marker (but both options will be still active).

Unlocking Objects

Select the object in the Graphical View.
Select Object > UnLock from the menu bar.

The object will revert to the standard color and will no longer be permanently locked in the Knowledge Base.

Opening a concurrent connection

To open a concurrent connection to a server (for example to a server that contains a different Knowledge Base):

Create a new Profile (if one is not already available) that specifies the server you want to access (File > Connection, select New in the Existing Connections dialog box and then Add in the Open Profile Connection dialog box).
When the Profile is displayed in the Open Profile Connection dialog box, select it.
Click Open.
The connection will be established and will be displayed in the Existing Connections dialog box.

When there are concurrent connections open, every time you launch a feature that requires a server connection (such as running the Assistant), you will be required to choose the connection you want to use in the Existing Connections dialog box.

Opening a saved Graphical View will “restore” its contents (objects, components, links etc.) and their relative positions.

To open a saved Graphical View:

Click on the toolbar, use the Open > Open Graphical View menu option, or the CTRL+O shortcut key.
In the displayed Open dialog box, select the Graphical View you want to open.
Click Open to display the Graphical View.

Notes

Any changes you have made (since the Graphical View was saved) to objects or components (client or server side), which have been re-analyzed and stored in the Knowledge Base will be reflected in your view (e.g. table column additions etc…) when you reopen it.

This application enables you to open several Graphical Views simultaneously, each displaying different objects and components. There are various ways to achieve this:

Opening a New Graphical View with the same connection parameters

To open a new Graphical View (a new physical window and specific Object Browser window) using the same Knowledge Base connection parameters as you are currently connected with:

Select the File > New option from the menu bar.
Now select the New Graphical View... option from the sub-menu.

The Initial Scope Selection Wizard will then launch (enabling you to select the analyses you want to work with). Once the Graphical View has been launched, you can work as you would with any other Graphical View.

To place an object in the Graphical View:

Drag and drop

Select the item you require in the Technical Browser or the Domain Browser with the left mouse button.
Hold down left mouse button.

Right click the object to launch the shortcut menu.
Select Send to > View and then the name of the Graphical View you want to add the object to.

Standard Print

Click on the tool bar, use the File > Print menu option, or the CTRL+P shortcut key.
All these options will then launch the Print dialog box, which is standard in Windows, offering you a variety of options.
Select your required parameters and then click OK.
Click Cancel to abort the print operation.

Saving the contents of the Graphical View

Saving a Graphical View means that the objects and components you place in the view together with their positions and any displayed links will all be recorded and stored in the Knowledge Base. You can give your view a name enabling you to open the view during a subsequent session.

To save the contents of the Graphical View:

Click on the toolbar, use the File > Save / Save As menu options, or the CTRL+S shortcut key.
In the displayed Save View dialog box (see below), enter a name for your view and a description if you require (this helps to distinguish it from other views).
You can also choose whether you want to save a snapshot image of your view in the Knowledge Base (Save model picture for Report option) - this can be used when generating Reports, and where you want to store the view - you can create a new folder if required.
Click Save to save the view in the Knowledge Base.

To select components in the Graphical View:

Click Edit > Select Objects in the menu bar (you can also use the shortcut key CTRL+E).
In the displayed Object Selection dialog box, choose your required filter parameters
Click Apply to confirm you selections.
All objects that correspond to your chosen filter parameters will be automatically selected in the Graphical View.

Selecting specific links

Click Edit > Select Links in the menu bar (you can also use the shortcut key CTRL+SHIFT+E).
In the displayed Link Selection dialog box, choose the type of links you want to locate and select.
Click Apply to confirm you selections.
All links that correspond to your chosen link types will be automatically selected in the Graphical View.

Selecting objects according to calling or called level

Select and object in the Graphical View.
Right click the object and select Selection > Linked Object

A multi option menu will now be displayed. Select the option that fits your requirements:


Select Linked Objects	All objects linked to the selected object will be selected.
Select all called objects up to level 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5	All objects called by the selected object will be selected - according to the level of displacement from the original object In other words, level 1 corresponds to directly called objects, level 2 to objects called via another object from the original object and so on.
Select all calling objects up to level 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5	All objects calling the selected object will be selected - according to the level of displacement from the original object. In other words, level 1 corresponds to objects that directly call the original object, level 2 to objects calling the original object via another object and so on.

Sending Objects to the Foreground or Background

When a large number of objects are placed in the Graphical View, some links between these objects will invariably overlap other objects:

The Foreground and Background options allow you to send a selected object to the background or bring it to the foreground.

To access these options select the object (you can also use these options with multiple objects) then:

Right click the selected object(s) to launch the shortcut menu, and select either Selection > Foreground or Selection > Background as required.

By default, when objects are added to the Graphical View, links between these objects can overlap each other (especially if two objects call each other) which can sometimes make understanding the view particularly difficult.

This option separates all links that are overlapping in the Graphical View:

By default, links are displayed in the Graphical View with straight lines. To display the links in “spline” form:

Using the magnifier

The Graphical View has a built-in “magnifier” to enable you to view part of the Graphical View in detail.

For example, if your Graphical View contains a large number of objects, and you need to see all objects at all times, you may not be able to see objects in detail. Using the magnifier, you can “hover” over part of the Graphical View and see the constituent items in detail:

If modifications are made to objects in an open Graphical View and these objects are subsequently re-analyzed and stored in the Knowledge Base, the Graphical View may not accurately reflect reality. To update the Graphical View, use the Refresh options:

Use the Graphic > Refresh Graphical View option located on the menu bar (or you can use the shortcut key: F5).

The Graphical View will then be re-drawn and updated to reflect the current state of the Knowledge Base.

Select the Expand... option from the shortcut menu.
In the displayed Expand Objects dialog box (see below), all the selected object's child objects will be displayed.
Click Add All Children, or select the objects you require and click Add.

When you have a number of linked objects displayed in the Graphical View, you can use a keyboard shortcut to view only those objects linked (whether calling or called) to a selected object :

Place the objects in the Graphical View.
Select the object you require.
Press and hold down the F9 key.
Objects not directly linked will be temporarily removed from the Graphical View.
Release the F9 key when finished.
Temporarily removed objects will be restored.

Place the objects you are working with in the Graphical View.

Viewing paths between objects

If you have a large number of objects displayed in a Graphical View, you can use Enlighten’s built in feature to highlight the various paths between two objects. A second option enables you to view all objects “involved” in a path between two objects.

Highlighting paths

To highlight a path between objects:

In the Graphical View, select the two objects you require.
Right click either of the two objects and select Selection > Highlight paths between X and Y (where X and Y equal the names of the two objects you have selected).
Enlighten will then calculate all possible paths between the two objects and highlight them in the Graphical View as shown in the image below.

Viewing properties

You can view a wide range of HTML based properties about objects, links, models (saved Graphical Views), domains and libraries. The properties are displayed in the Property window.

To view the properties of an item:

Right click the item (whether an object in the Technical Browser or a Library in the Library window).
Select Properties from the shortcut menu.
Or use the the F12 shortcut key

The properties for the item will then be displayed in the Property window:

To view the type of link that exists between two objects:

Roll your mouse pointer over the abbreviations displayed in the Graphical View.
A rollover bubble will display the link’s full name:

Notes

If there are no abbreviations displayed between objects, the Show Access Mode on Links option has been disabled. To enable this feature, click Tools > Options and then select the Objects tab. Select the Show Access Mode on Links option and click OK to confirm.
