Launching Search in Code/BF/Comments

This feature is in fact two features that function in very similar ways:

Search in Code

Click the menu Tools then select Search in Code from the drop down menu
Right click “white space” in the Graphical View or in the Technical/Domain Browser and select Search in Code from the shortcut menu.
Use the shortcut key CTRL+M.

These options will then automatically launch a series of wizards. The first wizard screen enables you to select the object or group of objects you want to use as the starting point for the search.

Search in Code - Limitations

The Search in Code feature has several language dependent limitations that must be taken into account when interpreting results.

The following languages/analyzers are NOT supported and cannot be searched:

Word Assistant results
Reference Pattern “x” type results

The following supported languages have some limitations:

All supported languages: You cannot search for a string that contains a comment’s begin/end tags. For example, if your code contains:

Search in Code/BF/Comments - Object Selection (Step 1)

Step 1 of the wizard (for both features) enables you to select the objects that you want to include in your search.

You can select one object or a combination of objects and the search is not limited to one language type - you can select as many different objects from as many different languages as you require.

You therefore have the ability to search on both a wide and narrow scale. This page describes how to select your search location and provides tips on how to use the built-in shortcuts that can help when you make this selection.

Search in Code/BF/Comments - Report (Step 3)

The Report step is always the final step in the wizard. All settings are summarized here so that you can review them and make amendments (by clicking the <Back button to return to the corresponding step).

Various options are also available, each one is explained below:

Save Report

You can use the Save report… button to create a copy of the search settings on your PC. A standard windows Save As dialog box will be launched enabling you to select a location for a .TXT or .HTML file.

Search in Code/BF/Comments Results

If the either feature returns any results (i.e.: matched character strings in the selected files/objects), they will be displayed automatically in the Log Window’s Search in Code tab, or in the Search in Comment tab:

The Log Window also displays relevant information during the search and will inform you of any problems encountered or when no results can be found.

Search in Code/BF/Comments - String Selection (Step 2)

This wizard screen enables you to enter the search string and define various other Advanced parameters if you require. When first displayed however, the two lower advanced option areas (Expression Search In and Regular Expression) are not displayed and will only be displayed when you click the Advanced button.

What is the Search in Code/BF/Comments feature?

This application provides an extremely practical tool that enables you to search for any character string or regular expression located in the code, comments or Business Functions of objects loaded into the Technical Browser. You can specify the type of object, individual object or group of objects you want to search.

This feature thus offers you:

the option of identifying all explicit references contained in all objects loaded into the Technical Browser.
the support of regular expressions used to describe the different forms of the character string being searched for.
