Understanding and Exploring Logs
To know the details about the Cast Management Studio logs and the details stored in them see " CAST Management Studio logging " in the offline help of CastMS. Further details about the important logs are explained below.
CastLog Files
These log files are usually created while running the analysis/snapshot
How to open a .CastLog file
These files are created when you run the analysis which means you will have the Cast AIP installed on the system.
There is a dedicated log viewer provided with the installation of the Cast AIP to view these files and make most of the information provided
Location of Log Viewer : <Cast Installation Folder>\LogViewer.exe
If you have a error/warning while taking the snapshot in the compute snapshot phase. go through the following space based on the log file which has the error/warning information.
What are fatal errors/errors/warnings.
If you have error(s) while running the snapshot and you dont have the log summary in the analysis log as shown in the below screenshot. Then it is a crash and you will have the error in the CAST-MS log file.
If you have error(s) while running the snapshot and you have log summary which says that you have (1 or >1) fatal error(s) then it is a crash and you will have the error in the analysis log file.
If you have error(s) while running the snapshot and you have log summary which says that you have (1 or >1) error(s) then they are normal errors which would not crash the analysis and you will have these errors in the same log file.
If you have warning(s) while running the snapshot and you have log summary which says th
at you have (1 or >1) warning(s) then they are normal warning(s) which would not crash the analysis and you will have these warnings in the same log file.
Screenshot of the Log Summary
Also, See CMS Analysis Unit - Information - Identify the Analysis unit log file to know how to find the list of analysis log files using queries on Management base.
CastLog2 Files
These files are usually created when using Delivery Manager tool
How to open a *.CastLog2 file
These files are created when you run the delivery manager tool, so you might not have CastAIP installed on your machine.
Once DMT is installed from the CAST-AIC Portal the CastLog2Viewer.exe is by default copied to the machine from AICPortal to a path similar to this. C:\Users\\AppData\Local\CAST\CAST\DMT\<application id>\CastLog2Viewer.exe on the Windows operating system.
To edit a castlog2 file, the standard method should be to open DMT and use the corresponding action in the package content tab.
Now if you want to edit the castlog2 file, you can use the CastLog2Viewer.exe available in the DeliveryManagerTool folder (C:\Program Files\CAST\8.0\DeliveryManagerTool) . With a command line, the syntax is:
CastLog2Viewer.exe <filename> , where <filename> is the full path of the castlog2 file.
The screenshot below shows how to open castlog2 file.
Note : It is very important to open the log with its viewer in order to enhance the ease of use and readability.
To get the full stack trace,
Select the line you want the details of
Go to File > Show Details
The stack trace appears in the bottom panel.
CastMS Log File
The default path of the CastMS log file in 8.3.x is [CastLogRootPath]\CAST-MS-<Date>-<Time>.log.txt
Cast-MS log Captures all the warnings and errors logged by the CAST Management Studio which is useful when we have a crash and there is no error in the log file of a specific features.
Complete Logging of information from CAST-MS in different logs is explained in the offline help (<installation folder>\Cast-MS-Help.exe) of CAST-MS
CAST Management Studio - Help > How To > CAST Management Studio logging
Getting the CSS Log File
Open a windows explorer
Go the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\CAST\CASTStorageService\db_data\pg_log or C:\Program Files\CAST\CASTStorageService\db_data\pg_log depending on 64 bits or 32 bits windows installation.
Get the PostgreSQL log files corresponding to the date of the tracked events (the creation date is in the filename). For instance PostgreSQL-2013-01-02_000000.log.
Understanding CUT Log File
During various steps of your migration process you may have to verify the corresponding CUT Logs files.
To help you verify, the below explanation will help you to understand the individual logs and refer them whenever required.
Where can I find the CUT logs?
- Logs are by default located in your [CastCurrentUserTempPath]\CAST\CAST\<version>\CUT\ folder.
Example of the logs generated are:
Understanding the CUT generated files:
- The complete upgrade report: Report-09_01_2015-14_50_393.xml (Errors and upgrade status of the reports)
- The CAST Server Manager report cast_local-servman-input-1441111858846.xml-ServerManagerLog.castlog (same as the CAST Server Manager standard log).
- The Configuration file cast_local-servman-input-1441111858846.xml (the configuration file is used by CAST Server Manager. One configuration file will exist for each upgraded Service).
- The CAST Server Manager report cast_central-servman-input-1441111858846.xml-ServerManagerLog.castlog (same as the CAST Server Manager standard log).
- The Configuration file cast_mngt-servman-input-1441111858846.xml (the configuration file is used by CAST Server Manager. One configuration file will exist for each upgraded Service).
- The CAST Server Manager report cast_mngt-servman-input-1441111858846.xml-ServerManagerLog.castlog (same as the CAST Server Manager standard log).
- The Configuration file cast_local-servman-input-1441111858846.xml (the configuration file is used by CAST Server Manager. One configuration file will exist for each upgraded Service).
- The assessment model migration log cast_mngtCMS-ImportAssessmentModel-1441113358742.log (will be generated if option 'Use new Assessment model from this version of AIP (version)' is selected)
- The Configure from migrated databases cast_mngtCMS-ConfigureFromMigratedDatabase-1441113752673.log.castlog (will only be generated if migrating from 7.0.x to 7.2 or 7.3)
The above CUT log files lists all the configurations (analysis units, analysis tools etc) that have been migrated and corresponding errors and warnings, if any.
